Seeking Forgiveness ( Kshamavaani)

Dear all,

So comes the Kshamavaani, and what we try to learn on this day is – Compassion, towards all the living beings. We seek forgiveness and grant the same from all the living beings.

To forgive someone requires a big heart. When we have decided to forgive someone, it means that we have a fresh page of life to start again. To seek forgiveness requires courage and humility. Being forgiven is also a blessing. The trust and love get cemented after one forgives someone. Life becomes full of bliss if we know how to forgive someone and seek forgiveness for our mistakes.

We therefore seek forgiveness for any of our actions, words or feelings that might have hurt you intentionally or unintentionally. (It might be a small or big thing such as not being able to respond to any of the mails and letters on time, inappropriate responses, delay in scholarship cheques, not being able to approve a mail in time, not being able to conduct YJA this year and so on and so forth).

for1

Seeking forgiveness with folded hands,

Uttam Sauch-English

UTTAMA SHAUCH (SUPREME CONTENTMENT)

· Learn to enjoy what you already have.

· We do not see what we have, we see what others have.

We always expect that others should have a pure conscience, should think well about us. If we expect this from others then we must also ensure that we think for other’s wellness, our conscience does not get malice for others; but at times it does. So we have to think how to cleanse our conscience of this malice & make our mind speech & conduct pure by all means.

(Contentment – The Lack of Greed)

The feeling of inner purity is in fact Shauch Dharma (Contentment). Let’s try to understand the Shauch Dharma in light of the four Kashayas namely – Anger (Krodh), Arrogance/ Pride (Maan), Deceit (Maya), and Greed (Lobha).

Contentment & purity comes in the absence of greed. If there is a reason behind malice/ impurity then it’s Greed. If we look at our day to day life then we see three kinds of malice or there are three kinds of Greed that we possess.

Types of Greed

(The Greed of Wealth)

The peculiarity of this greed is that the more we gain the greedier we become. Everyone has the greed for money. We have listened in so many ways about Greed for wealth, but could we really get rid of it till date? The solution to this issue is that we keep as much is necessary for us, and give up the longing for any more. Alternatively we can divert this greed in some other direction. We can spend more time in Spiritual practices so that we are away from this greed for that much time. We can surely do this much.

(The Greed of Son & Family)

(The Greed of Family)

Who doesn’t know that Greed leads to misery & downfall of a person? But does this really help? The longing to achieve anything that we see has been deep rooted in us since ever. Although these things may not be really useful for us, rather it will harm me; even we know that; but how do I still follow them blindly; we have to think over this. When we had four items in our hone, we were able to live our life happily; now we have four hundred but still miss the peace of mind. It means I must limit my possessions.

We have a tendency: we don’t realize what we have, but we surely long for the things others have. Others long for what we have. It’s simple math – if we realize what we have then all the Greed would be gone. But we generally don’t realize what we have achieved & the feeling of discontent keeps on growing by the day. So should we just ignore what others have? No, all we need to do is to let the other person be happy in what he has & enjoy what we have.

All our longings give us are consolations but in reality we end up achieving nothing. If we are contented with what we have then we wouldn’t have anything else to be earned. What do we earn for? To achieve contentment/ satisfaction. But we end up earning everything in this world but self satisfaction.

There’s a popular story by Tolstoy – “How much Land does a man require?” that all of us must have heard.

Somebody conferred a blessing on a man that “starting from sunrise to sunset all the land that you walk through and come back shall be yours.” So this man started running with first ray of sun & kept running without stopping. He had to return to the starting point before sunset. But he was so exhausted by the time he reached 4-5 feet before the finishing point; he collapsed & never woke up again. He breathed his last breath at that point. It was written on his grave – “How much Land does a man require?”

We should ask ourselves how much do we need. If we know how less do we need & start enjoying what we have then contentment & inner purity is imminent.

PURITY IN LIFE

Purity has several meanings – a spotless life, a pristine conscience, a life full of meaning (purpose).

A spotless life is not in terms of a clean body, it means a spotless mind. Throughout a day we get so many chances where our mind is likely to be clouded by bad feelings for others. If we know that our mind cannot be malice by anyone’s action then we can be sure that our life is spotless & sparkling. This may not sound very easy. But we can surely try that out of a hundred chances that I get in a day, I’ll restrain myself from maligning our mind.

What do we mean by pristine conscience? If we see someone crying today then we consider him a weak person. It might even be considered out of fashion. Our heart is deprived of its softness. Whereas our conscience should be so pristine that even looking at other’s sorrows, other’s misery our eyes should be sodden (become teary). Vinoba Bhave used to say – I always clean my own room & throw the dust myself so that I am reminded everyday that the way I wouldn’t like to sit in a dirty room, how would God like to come in a dirty mind. God comes only in a pristine conscious. The more we give up malice the pure our conscience becomes.

An incident from Shrimad Raychand’s life explains beautifully what a pure life or a life full of meaning means. Shrimad Raychand had made a deal of Jewels with someone. Once the deal was completed, prices of Jewels went so high that if the other person had to pay for the deal, he would be forced into a bankruptcy. He didn’t show up to Raychandji. This was very evident to Raychandji. He knew even if the other person sells off all his property, he cannot pay for the goods. So one day Raychandji himself went to that person’s house. On seeing him, the other person said “Sir, why did you take the pain of coming here! Believe me I’ll pay every single penny I owe you.”

To this Raychandji said “First of all you show me the paper on which we made that deal.

That person handed over the paper to Raychandji. He took it & said “Just because of this piece of paper you have malice your mind.” & he tore that paper into pieces in front of that person. He said “Raychand is a Jain. He drinks milk not man’s blood!”

What do we call this? This is called the purity of mind, the clarity of purpose of life. And a person who is so pure is respected by everyone.

From these incidents we have to learn how to give up on our Greediness. Make sure that you find at least one chance in a day where you can attain contentment & purity of mind & conscience. Such chances are rare in our lives but if we can benefit from them then they’ll help us give up on our greediness & will help us attain this Dharma of inner contentment.

Uttam Arjav(English)

UTTAMA

ARJAVA (STRAIGHFORWARDNESS OF CONDUCT)

· Complications of life are a result of Show off & pompousness.

· The cause behind an artificial life is that we want to project ourselves as something that we are not.

UTTAMA AARJAVA

Aarjava means straightforwardness in conduct of one’s mind, speech, & body. What is straightforwardness can be understood from this verse.

Such a process involves all three – mind, speech & body. What’s on the mind should be so good & virtuous that we don’t feel ashamed saying it, we don’t hesitate doing it. This type of virtuousness & straightforwardness of our conscience is called as uprightness in conduct.

Let’s give a thought to why do we conduct in a pretentious or treacherous manner with others. There is only one reason – we want to project ourselves as something that we are not. Hence we start the deceitful lifestyle – just to gain some benefit by hurting others.

If we start cheating others, hurting others (physically or otherwise) & start enjoying that then slowly we will lose our credibility & truthfulness. This is what’s happening in the present. We have become too artificial, have started to show off. As a result we have made our life very complicated/ complex. Take example of a rope. If it is entangled and we try to make it straight, it keeps on getting more & more entangled. Similarly we involve some unnecessary complications in our lives & then try to correct things all our life. All this is because of our show off.

Arjava or uprightness has some synonyms – honesty, good hearted, simplicity, innocence, warm-heartedness, and straightforwardness. We should try & introspect if we have all these feelings in our heart in different instances. If not, then try to bring them in your life slowly. While practicing these virtues people may try to trick you, cheat you. But remember you need not cheat them in return; just be cautious not to be tricked or cheated.

If you are tricked, you may feel hurt for sometime; but still you’ll have the satisfaction that you haven’t cheated anyone (the karmas for which may be carried for many lives).

All of us have heard the story of Baba Bharati. A dacoit had stolen his horse by tricking him as a wounded pilgrim. But what did Baba Bharati say to the dacoit – “Please don’t tell about this incident to anyone otherwise people would stop believing in helping the poor & needy”. Similarly we should maintain our honesty & credibility whether we are in a business, in a market, or in a social-religious place.

If you want to learn straightforwardness then spend some time with children. They are really pure at heart. All of us must have heard of this incident. If we do not want to meet someone at home, we ask little children to tell that person that “Tell him, I am not at home.” But children are really innocent. He’d go and tell that person “Papa says, he is not at home.” What should the child do, he doesn’t know what trickery you are trying to do here. He just says what he understands. Although this might seem to be a losing situation, but the loss is only temporary.

We shouldn’t look at the material gains in the present. If the temporary gain is actually leading to loss of your character, honesty & trust in the longer term then it’s a bigger loss. TO avoid this lifetime loss, it’s worth to have a smaller loss in the present.

There’s a simple example on simplicity.

An old lady was by the street carrying a Potli on her head. A horse rider passed by her. So she asked him “Son, could you please carry this luggage (Potli) of mine on your horse for some time. I’ll take it from you at the next crossing.”

To this the rider responded “Is that why I have this horse for. I don’t have time to carry your luggage” & he moved on. But after moving a few meters, the horse rider thought “maybe it’s not a bad idea to carry the old lady’s luggage. She might be carrying some valuables in it. I can simply take that & run away.”

So he went back to the lady & said “I am sorry. I should’ve carried your luggage. Now please let me carry it for you.” It’s very easy to try and look simple; but it’s very difficult to actually be simple.

The old lady declined to the rider’s offer of help. Perplexed the rider asked her if anybody said anything to her about him. To this the lady replied “Son, it’s your mind that has said everything to me that it said to you.”

It’s not easy to deceive someone, because ultimately you are deceiving yourself.

One’s own conduct may be crooked. His bodily action, speech and mind may be lacking in straightforwardness. Avoiding this crookedness in thought, word and deed, is called Aarjavam or uprightness in conduct.

Pravachan on Uttam Kshama and objective of Paryushan

Munishri's Pravachan on Deeksha Diwas

Many thanks to Nikunj for documenting this.
